EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
